Good liver health isn’t something we usually associate with the holiday season. In fact, many of us consider Christmas parties to be the exact opposite of something good for the liver. That said, many people don’t realize that it isn’t just alcohol that is hard on that important organ.

In fact, good liver health is a concern with many of the things we drink and that we eat during the holidays. Yes, alcohol is tough on the liver, but so are cakes, cookies, candies, pies and everything else sugary and fatty that we consume. When we eat these foods a little bit at a time, the liver can easily keep up. However, when we overeat and drink too much at the same time, we overburden our liver significantly.

Is Good Liver Health Possible in December?

It is possible to keep up good liver health while lowering the risk of added abdominal fat around the liver, increased inflammation or even fatty liver disease. Those threats are real and their risk increases with age.

Does good liver health mean you need to give up everything you love during the holidays? Not at all. It just means we should pay a bit of attention and, when possible, exercise moderation. Restraint isn’t always easy at this time of year, but it can be managed.

Focus on Good Liver Health Before and After Parties

Since parties are where you’re most likely to be offered the tastiest treats (and worst health offenders), use the rest of your time to place your greatest focus on good liver health. Make breakfast and lunch a sacred time for your nutrition since those are typically the meals over which you’ll have the most control.

Eat foods that are nutrient dense, have meals with moderate calorie loads, and do your best to limit your intake of pretty much anything unhealthy whenever possible during these meals. This will help to reduce the impact of your party meals.

Be Aware of Your Drinking

A great step to take in the name of good liver health is to drink a glass of water for every beverage you drink that contains alcohol. This is the rule for a glass of wine, a bottle of beer, a cocktail or even a shot.

Not only will you stay hydrated, which is an important step for good liver health, but you’ll also slow down your rate of drinking alcohol. You’ll automatically keep your drinking down if you’re not even slightly thirsty.
